Rest in Peace

3 May 2013
Opening reception featuring the works of Kenneth Moore at Art First Gallery Fredericksburg, VA
Mats Jerndal, owner of OddBox Studios in downtown Fredericksburg, said Moore used to rent an art studio in the same building as his business. He described Moore as intelligent and philosophical and said the two would have deep conversations for hours.
Jerndal said he jokingly told Moore he should host a talk show.
Moore also participated in a “live painting” event at OddBox, where he and another artist had two hours to finish their pieces as a band performed. Jerndal hung Moore’s painting in his studio and later gave it to a colleague as a wedding present. “He was in love with it,” Jerndal said of the colleague.
Moore lived in the Fredericksburg area for several years before moving last spring, Jerndal said. But Moore returned in the fall, apparently to study, and dropped by OddBox.
That’s the last time Jerndal saw him.
“He gave me a big hug,” he said.

We met in 1995, our first year at Governor’s School for the Arts, in Norfolk, VA. He was a 9th grader at Franklin High School (Franklin, VA) & I was in 10th grade at Great Bridge High School (Chesapeake, VA). Our friendship is the greatest proof of miracles because we found each other exactly 54.8 miles apart in a time before cell phones, Google maps, or GPS – a time without the internet, if you can imagine. We became fast friends – and actually this picture (below) was taken a few weeks after we met. We instantly clicked. He was hilarious. We decided to participate in the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival Youth Art Exhibition together but neither of us could drive yet – his parents transported him 1.5 hours away to my house the night before. He slept on the couch and my mom drove us 45 min to VA Beach Oceanfront early morning to register to participate in the youth exhibit. We didn’t win but we were both so excited to be there..to have the experience. We look like babies. I thought it was the coolest day of my life thus far. I made my mom take a Polaroid of us.

“My cousin, Kenneth Moore, painted this for me a few years ago. […] So proud to have this painting. I asked Kenneth if he would paint something for me, thinking it would be something small. I had doxies at the time. This is what he came up with. As you can see from this painting, Kenneth was so very talented. I am very grateful that I have this work of art done by him. We miss you and love you, sweet boy. Rest in peace.” – Sandy Holloman
